Another Beheading

After three weeks of toying with the emotions of many thousands of civilized people, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi beheaded Kenneth Bigley. Looking back it was naïve to think Zarqawi was going to release him.

I would think by now that I would have become desensitized to these murders, but that is not the case. Even though I have never seen any videos, I am haunted by the still images of the various beheadings; Nick Berg looking serene, maybe thinking those bastards are not going to go through with it. The South Korean interpreter Kim Sun-il who was blindfolded and had his mouth open in the horror of knowing death was upon him. Kenneth Bigley sitting in a small cell begging for his life. These are horrible images and, coupled with descriptions of the beheading by those with the stomach to watch, they are seared into my brain forever.

While I am totally against invading Iraq and think we went in without a clue, we are there now and we must stamp out Zarqawi and his minions. We will demean ourselves by trying to negotiate with this type of people as evidenced by the news that Tony Blair had opened secret negotiations to win Bigley’s freedom, and which in the end proved to be utterly futile. Talking is not an option, it only brings the terrorist a greater sense of power and they must be laughing at such attempts. The terrorists only understand death and “martyrdom”, so we in the free world should never relent in destroying them.

It is terrible that many civilians will die in the effort to kill the militants, but these pieces of filth hide among women and children. The bad guys know that it is a cannot lose situation for them, for the civilian population will give pause to the forces looking for them and the civilian deaths will aid their cause in recruitment. They are an insidious bunch who are able to fight their battle from a much stronger position. But it is up to the civilian population to aid the forces that want to destroy the terrorists by not providing the cover the scum need in order to be effective. No one wants the deaths of civilians, because killing civilians is what happened to us on 9/11, but as long as the general population shelters these criminals, civilians will always be caught up in the conflict. There are normal people in Iraq who know where Zarqawi is hiding, just like you would know if there is a crack house on your street. These people must come forward and provide information so that Zarqawi would finally achieve the martyrdom he so richly deserves.
