My Mind is Mush
It is getting very close to the elections, and I still have reasons to vote for both men and neither man. My mind is more convoluted than ever. Neither candidate wants to say anything worthwhile but they sure can deliver the rhetoric in little convenient catchphrases.
The debates were fun to watch, filled with falsehoods on both sides. Some mistruths were challenged by the candidates and others were ignored. I guess the one that sticks out the most was in the Vice Presidential debate where Cheney said this is the first time he met Edwards. Why did not Edwards respond to that? Why did not Edwards remind him of the prayer breakfast? Surely he remembered. Good thing we have people who take pictures.
Speaking of John Edwards, why is he on the ticket? He does have a nice haircut and gleaming smile. If Kerry is elected, God help us if something happened to the new president. No telling what Edwards may do. He has not even completed one term as a senator and somehow he is qualified to be Vice President. I think I am going to push my kids into being trial lawyers. They really do well.
Also on the subject of the debates, is there any doubt now who is running the White House? It’s got to be the guy that was always in the super secret bunker. You've got to protect the man making the real decisions.
On the economy; if you vote Bush you get more of the same. Tax breaks for everybody, but if you are rich you get the megabucks. I wonder if Teresa Heinz Kerry will secretly vote for Bush; she doesn’t have to tell her husband. Kerry said he is going to cap the Bush tax breaks at $200,000. To me it sounds like my taxes will not change no matter who is elected so why should I get off the couch.
On foreign policy; Bush is making it clear he will march across the Middle East until every country he feels is a threat has a Washington-friendly government. Kerry, on the other hand, says he can get the French and Germans to help us. Hmmm, the Germans lost the last war they fought and needed us for a long period of time to keep from becoming a part of the Soviet Union. As for the French, I believe the last war we fought alongside the French was Vietnam and they bailed out of that one. I know Europe will rejoice in a Kerry win, but so what. They would find something else to gripe about.
And now everybody is telling me this is the most important election in a generation, how I have got to vote, but I cannot vote without some hard facts. One fact I would like to know is how long we are going to be in Iraq. Neither candidate has said anything convincing there so I've got to rate that one a push.
You've got to hand it to the Republicans and Democrats. With the money they've spent on think tanks and focus groups, they have managed to split this country into perfect halves. Incredible. And the fact they did this two elections in a row is even better.
I really think whoever is elected will not matter much to many of us living in fly-over country. I plan on going to work the next day, coming home, watching some television. Things will not change much. I am sure Kerry will go after bin Laden, he may even go to the right part of the world to look. If Bush is re-elected maybe someone can point him back in the right direction. I find it odd not to be able to get worked-up by either candidate, I used to get worked-up in the past. I'm not really sure why, but I am sure I'll be glad when this election is over.
