Rise Of The Weird
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. - Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
We've got one week left, and a sense of weirdness is creeping out from cracks and crevices everywhere. The left is trumpeting Big Defense and Foreign Policy, while the right shouts out for Domestic Programs and Homeland Initiatives. The British Royal Navy allows devil-worship at sea. Tomorrow night there's a total lunar eclipse covering the entire U.S. Britney Spears got married. For real. And the surest sign that this isn't Kansas anymore, the Boston Red Sox lead the World Series 3-0, leaving them one game away from shattering a curse that's dogged baseball since 1918.
Should I take the red one, or the blue one? Or maybe just drink the Kool-Aid and knock it back with some Wild Turkey. I'm surrounded by an enraged electorate, 300 million rabid bovine beasts on a wild-west rampage. A country on the verge of civil war, each side convinced that the other is made up of the vilest villanous baby-killers and ready to gouge out the eyes of the enemy with a spoon.
God, I thought I would never wish for a return to 1970. Put Tricky Dick in the ring with these guys and he'd be outclassed. I'm beginning to think I'd actually prefer Nixon's liquor-induced paranoid fantasies to the manic-depressive schizophrenic sleaze that passes for campaign rhetoric these days. At least with Nixon you always knew where you stood. It was us against them. Now it's us against us.
Maybe I'll just get a suite at the Hilton and hole-up there to ride out the coming Armageddon. Order up a double handful of room service and invite the Sandinistas over in case things get ugly.
I could really use some sleep.

"each side convinced that the other is made up of the vilest villainous baby-killers and ready to gouge out the eyes of the enemy with a spoon."
Is that really what the Democrats think about the Republicans? I thought we were pro-life.
I have to agree with you, it does feel like the brink of civil war. What puts people on such sides? Could it be the ultimate battle between good and evil?
Personally, I just like all people. Debating beliefs is fun and I am not angry at anyone because of their beliefs. But it seems to me when I make even a light-hearted comment those on the left pounce. Like a wounded tiger in fear of it's life.
Why can't we in the public arena talk civilly about our different views and respect the other? Listen with an open mind and consider their points? Then come together with the best of ideas and put them to work for the best interest of all. I think there is too much self-centeredness and pride on all sides and we just need to humble ourselves and love our neighbors. Pride comes before a fall!

I am sure b was speaking metaphorically. Nobody is going to gouge out eyes with spoons. They will use ice picks :)
I wonder if blown-up families in Iraq think Republicans are pro-life and I hope you were speaking metaphorically also with your good and evil statement. Since you support Bush, it looks like you are calling Kerry evil.
In the bloodsport of politics there is not much light-heartedness (no faint-heartedness either). Believe me, when the left makes a statement, the right is ready to pounce also.
As for your last comment, the editors at "I Can't Think" welcome viewpoints from all sides, not just the left or right and they hope it is presented in a civil manner. But use care in making statements, they are your face and voice in this wild and wooly electronic medium.
