The Rise of the American Empire

Jay Bookman wrote an article a few days back laying out his theory of the President's real reason for invading Iraq. His rationale raises serious questions concerning America's future.

Mr. Bookman reasons that the President wants permanent military bases in Iraq, having been asked to leave the bases in Saudi Arabia. That reasoning goes a long way toward explaining Kerry’s questioning of why the U.S. rushed to war. The Bush administration knew they had a small window during which to attack, because I am sure they wanted it finished in time to be forgotten before the election.

Except that they apparently miscalculated somewhere and this war goes on. Is it worth the continued loss of American life to establish these bases? Are we really on a path of American imperial dominance in the area? These questions must be answered in our near future. Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi saw that he could be invaded next, so he had a sudden change of faith. Iran is next on our Mid-East hit list and they are not going to convert easily.

Saddam Hussein was able to control Iraq because he was not hated nearly as bad as we are. The Islamic fundamentalists are legion there and maintaining military bases will become very costly in terms of money and life. This is the price of empire.
